Sepultura

L’équipe de Thorium a eu la chance de s’entretenir avec le chanteur Derrick Green en pleine tournée européenne et de passage à Toulouse le 25 Février dernier avec le groupe de thrash metal Sepultura.

Do you think that your fans greeted your last album differently than Kairos, and why?

We usually change, from each album. Naturally it was the first album with Casagrande Eloy playing the drum with us and the producer was robinson, so it input as well. So I think a lot of different elements actually made the comparison of the two albums, they are really different and bring different fans as well.

20 years after the success of chaos AD, what would you say to the people who pretend that Sepultura died when Max left?

I wouldn’t really say anything to them, it’s really their decision, you know they really do actually go to a show, to have an actual opinion, to know what they are talking about. I would say they probably have to check out the show, and go to the show and actually make up their mind for themselves, think a lot of people are following us, groups of people, you know I have found out that people like to follow the flock. It has always been that way with people kind of following flocks. But I think one thing is really good with underground music and all that alternative music, it was an appeal to the people who didn’t mean to follow the flock. Think a lot of group would need to go back to that. I have seen it, happening more and more, people becoming kind into the same thing, doing the same things ’cause everybody else is. Now I want it to stand out. People who really wanna make up their own decisions, and make a step forward to go to the show.

How do you deal with the generation gap with the brand new and talented drummer Eloy?

I think it’s great, I think there are a lot of things that we’ve learn from him, he definitely mean very much for us. I don’t think it’s really a problem that Eloy is younger, he’s capable at what he does. I don’t think is a typical 22 year. He adapts himself to the situation, it’s really quick and it’s incredible for everybody.

Would you say that all this changing line up has been a weakness or does it make the strength and the special touch of Sepultura?

I think is just the reality , I don’t think it was actually a question of weakness when you have somebody leaving your group, but the major changes I don’t think we could be here today without all the major changes of course. And I think we’re in a very gifted position, the position that you really have to really work hard. I think that a lot of people really feel what we have or they are kind of actually involving despite all the changes and everything we’ve being able to do what we truly love to do

Let’s talk about rumors and murmuring… Is there a real danger for the name of Sepultura?

No absolutely not. I think rumors and all those things have always been, since the very beginning. As far as 1996 when the first split happen, it was the exact same question. As far as People rumors with what’s going on. Nothing is really changing even when there was another Cavalera in the band, it’s the same, it was the exact same thing.

Would you that the French public has been loyal these years?

Absolutely!! I think it’s actually going stronger, I noticed that the people are really accepting and sticking to Sepultura. It’s something truly incredible. We’ve been able to play in many different places in France like festivals, club gigs, it just seems like it’s really growing in anyways.

Is there one French show that remains in your memories?

The first time we played in France, it was in Paris, opening for Slayers, and it was at Le zenith, it was exciting! Also in my memory the first Hellfest.

“The Mediator Between head And Hands Must Be Heart” words of Fritz Lang from his movie Metropolis, is that kind of a claim?

Is nothing really to do so much with the movie himself and the album, but the title was something really strong and it’s what is happening nowadays you know lot of people losing touch of why they are doing certain things and they are letting the heart behind, it is what makes everybody human and become so robotic, it’s something that is constantly around. It’s something that can’t happen if you always do something with the heart, you know the passion behind what you are doing.
