8 Novembre 2013 – I got to sit down with Sander Van Doorn before his show at New City gas. We sat in the green room just after seeing a performance by Julian Jordan got the crowd pumping. Right before Sander took the decks was a surprise performance by Blau. Sander in fine form after being on the road for a few weeks already !! Here are a few questions i had for him.

Thorium – You’ve played quite a few times here in Montreal at a lot of venues like Redlite, Beachclub and now here at New City Gas. What do you enjoy most about the Montreal scene?

Sander – Definitely the crowd, the energy over here is really unique. Besides the fact that the clubs over here can go till 7 or 8 in the morning! It’s pretty bizarre and people just keep on going and that’s a really big plus.

T – What are your thoughts on the present EDM scene ?

S – I think it’s as big as it’s ever been. It blew up a couple of years ago in North America, moving to South America, Asia, Australia. It’s at the top of its game right now. I think it’s gonna last for at least another 5 – 10 years.

T – What do you think of all the festivals right now, do you think there’s too many ?

S – Well I’m from Holland and if you go in the summer you would have 3-4 festivals in a weekend. Which is a lot for a very small radius. That market is at its max, unlike Canada or the U.S where there’s so much more room and space to expand.

T – Do you think think they’ll lose their glamour ?

S – Well you know eventually, it’s all about promoters and artists we need to keep coming up with new ideas. New set ups, new ways of keeping up the new shows.

T – So you’ve been on the road for a little over 2 weeks now, how’s it been ? Getting tired ??

S – No, no, I’m still going strong actually. I’ve already had 3-4 shows this week. All shows are phenomenal, last weekend was Halloween. It’s actually pretty do-able with the flying schedule, one hour here, one hour there. It’s actually better than doing a tour in Europe where it’s a few connections between a each city. I’m pretty fresh now.

T – How did you decide to work with Julian on the tour ?

S –  Well we’ve done a couple of shows and we really had a really good connection. I love his music and his DJ sets are really insane which really connects well with my sets. I was happy having him on board. We also did the track Kangaroo together. For me, I really embrace all the artists coming up and wherever I can help them, well I will !

T – Any new tracks coming up soon ?

S – Ya a lot of new works, a few collaborations. I’m actually taking a pretty big studio break in February to work on a lot of new stuff, even working towards a new artist album as well. It’s gonna be all about the music in 2014 !

T – Surprises for tonight ?

S – WOW, obviously Doorn records has blown up and I’ve got so many new tracks to play. A few new tracks from myself and a lot of new releases. I’m going to be introducing a lot of new music out there!

T – A couple of one line questions quick fire style! Next Superstar ?

S – Hmmm good question. Alesso… There’s a lot of good candidates out there but Hardwell will be here for awhile.

T – Do you prefer playing festivals or clubs ?

S – I prefer the combination. Because with festivals it’s a shorter set but more adrenaline, you’re playing in front of a bigger crowd. Club shows are more intimate, and you can experiment a little more so I love the combination.

T – Favourite track right now ?

S –  I would say it’s Flute by Thomas Newson, New World Sound.

T – What’s on repeat on your iPod ?

S – Whenever I don’t listen to dance music it’s still Sigur Ros, Radiohead, The Cure, stuff like that.

T – Any Purple Haze tracks in the future ?

S – I think so yes, I love the name, the whole sound that goes with the name. I’ve never really parted with my alias, definitely not, and I feel like doing a new Purple Haze track definitely.

I would like to thank Sander for his time. It was now his time for him to take the decks in front of a fired up Montreal crowd. It wasn’t a huge crowd compared to some previous shows. But the patrons were fired up and ready to dance. He had the crowd going right from the first drop. Fists pumping in the air, he had the crowd jamming and enjoying the new tracks. He didn’t get the chance to play many old hits as I felt he was catering for the new generation. All in all,  Sander still knows how to rock a party! New City Gas was on fire.
